Applying For A Merchant Account Online

You've decided to set up a web site and sell your products and now you need to figure out a way to accept payment from your customers. Most people who shop online use credit cards when placing their orders. A few people use electronic checks, but those are the minority. It would be in the best interest of your company to set up a way to accept both credit cards and debit cards so it will be as easy as possible for your customer to place an order with you.

As internet commerce has exploded in recent years and internet merchant accounts have become much more commonplace, it is easier than ever to qualify for your own merchant account. However, there are still laws and regulations you must follow, even if you fill out an application online.

Applying for a merchant account online is easy to do and it isn't hard to find a website offering merchant account services. You must be careful that you deal with an authentic site and do not divulge private information to a scam website.

How can you tell if a website is legitimate?

Check the website for contact information. You should be able to contact the merchant account provider by phone and mail. Providing contact information is standard practice for business websites, and if you come across a site that does not, it might indicate it is a fraud site or an affiliate site. Either way, you should be leery about doing business with them.

Check the Better Business Bureau in the city where the merchant account provider is located to see if any complaints have been filed against them by disgruntled clients. Since it is impossible to please everyone, one or two complaints may not be enough for concern. If several complaints have been lodged against them, it is time to look for another provider.

Seek personal recommendations. You can visit the various webmaster forums and ask for feedback about the merchant account provider. Be leery of a company no one uses or seems to not know much about. On the other hand if several people chime in with positive comments, it might be an indication you have found a good provider.

Another thing to keep in mind when applying for a merchant account online is that it pays to shop around and compare the fee structures of competing providers. You will want to get the best deal so you don’t pay any more than you have to in your monthly fees.

Applying online for your merchant account is fast, easy, and convenient. A representative will probably follow up with a telephone call and you may be required to fax in supporting documents. But if you are approved, you can have your merchant account up and running in just a matter of days.
