Merchant Accounts for Online Business

Thanks to the instant gratification society that we live in today, being able to accept credit cards is practically required for a business to be successful. We want to order products now, pay now, and receive them as soon as possible. The best way for businesses to meet this demand is by accepting credit cards, and in order to do that, a merchant account is required.

Having a merchant account isn't without its own set of problems however. Credit card fraud is also rampant, and merchants must absorb the cost of fraudulent charges and charge backs. In addition to reversing the original amount, a processing fee is usually also deducted right from the business banking account.

Merchants can protect themselves somewhat against credit card theft by running fraud checks on their orders. For instance, the name, address, credit card number and CVV must all be correct. In addition to that, IP numbers may be cross checked against the cardholder's address. Orders from certain countries that are known for a high rate of credit card abuse may be blocked all together.

The inconveniences of performing fraud checks and dealing with chargebacks are worth it in the long run because of the increase in the amount of orders the business receives due to accepting credit cards. Requiring customers to mail in checks just wouldn’t be a good business practice in this day and age. Plus, due to the fact that fraud also is high on orders placed with checks, it is wise to wait until the checks clear before shipping orders which can cause an additional delay of up to 10 days or longer for the customer.

Another thing a business must be aware of when it comes to having their own merchant account is the monthly and transaction fees. It is a good idea to shop around and compare offers from various providers because the rates can very quite a bit and it will depend upon the monthly sales volume as to which offer is the best to choose.

The business owner should also read closely and understand the stipulations of his merchant account agreement. It is possible that an internet merchant account which allows collecting credit card information over the internet will not allow the merchant to accept credit card orders by phone or mail. In order to do that, the merchant may need to buy a terminal such as is used for swiping credit cards in offline stores.

Today, it is fairly easy for an online business to be approved for a merchant account so they accept credit card orders online. It is important to understand the fees, regulations and restrictions before signing the contract.
